Increases in female participation may decrease occupational segregation if women enter male dominated sectors but may increase segregation if they enter already female dominated sectors. However, 'hard' mandatory gender boardroom quotas, which force companies to achieve a set percentage of women on their boards, are not necessary; 'softer', voluntary targets can work, too, provided there are adequate childcare services available.
